For most of Western intellectual history, the most powerful teaching technique in existence required no textbooks, no tests, and no technology. It required only one thing: a great question.
Socrates never lectured. He asked. He probed. The Research Case for Questioning
The educational research on questioning-based learning is unambiguous:
- Retrieval practice (having students articulate what they know rather than re-reading it) consistently outperforms passive review for retention.
- Elaborative interrogation (asking "why" and "how" questions) deepens understanding more effectively than fact presentation.
- Discussion-based learning produces stronger transfer — the ability to apply knowledge to new problems — than lecture-based instruction.
These findings don't require us to choose between technology and rigor. They require us to design technology that enables rigor.
What Educators Can Do Now

- Replace closed questions with open ones. Instead of "What year did the war begin?" try "Why do you think this war began when it did, and not earlier?"

- Sit with discomfort. Let questions hang in the air. Silence before an answer often means thinking is happening.
