This is the question every parent is navigating right now — awkwardly, quietly, usually without much guidance from schools.
Some parents have banned AI tools entirely. Some allow unlimited use. Most are somewhere in the middle, unsure where the line is, uncomfortable with both extremes.
The honest answer is that there is no universal right answer. But there is a framework for thinking about it — one grounded in what we know about how learning works, what AI tools actually do, and what your child needs to develop as a thinker. That framework is what this post offers.
First: Understand What's Actually Happening When Your Child Uses ChatGPT
There's an important distinction between two fundamentally different ways a student can use an AI tool, and conflating them leads to bad parenting decisions.
Use Type 1: Cognitive offloading. The student has a problem or assignment, doesn't want to do the thinking, and asks ChatGPT to do it for them. They copy, lightly edit, and submit. The AI did the reasoning. The child did not.
Use Type 2: Cognitive scaffolding. The student has genuinely attempted a problem, is stuck on a specific point, and uses ChatGPT to get unstuck — then continues the reasoning themselves. Or the student uses AI to check a finished essay and see where their argument has gaps.
The same tool, used in two completely different ways, produces completely different learning outcomes. Use Type 1 produces fluent-looking outputs and no learning. Use Type 2 can actually accelerate genuine learning.
The question parents should be asking isn't "did my child use AI?" It's "how did they use it?"
The Learning Test: Five Questions to Ask Your Child
After any homework session where your child may have used AI, ask these five questions. They're not interrogations — frame them as genuine curiosity. The answers tell you almost everything you need to know.
1. "Can you explain this to me in your own words?" If your child can explain the key ideas fluidly, without reading from the page, they understood the material — regardless of how the assignment was produced. If they can't, they didn't process it.
2. "What was the hardest part of figuring this out?" Genuine learning always involves some difficulty. A child who did real thinking will have something specific to say. A child who outsourced everything will have nothing, because they didn't experience any difficulty.
3. "What would happen if...?" Follow up on any topic in the assignment with a hypothetical. "What would happen if the character had made a different choice?" "What if the equation had a different variable?" A child with genuine understanding can speculate. A child with borrowed output cannot.
4. "What part of this are you still not sure about?" Real learners always have residual uncertainty. If your child claims to be 100% sure about everything in a complex assignment, that's actually a warning sign — either the task was too easy, or they didn't engage with it at the depth that produces genuine uncertainty.
5. "How would you do this differently next time?" Metacognitive reflection — thinking about your own thinking — only emerges from actual thinking. This question reveals whether the experience produced any genuine learning at all.
The Framework: When to Allow It, When to Limit It
✅ Appropriate AI Use (Generally Allow)
- Checking completed work for errors. Finishing an essay themselves, then using AI to identify weak arguments or unclear sentences — then revising it themselves.
- Getting unstuck on a specific concept. "I don't understand what 'irony' means in this context" — using AI to clarify a definition, then continuing their own analysis.
- Generating initial research directions. Using AI to identify subtopics to explore, then doing real reading in those areas.
- Practicing. Using AI as a study tool — asking it to quiz them on a topic, then working through their answers out loud.
⚠️ Cautious AI Use (Limit and Monitor)
- Using AI for ideas, then developing them themselves. Risky if your child defaults to using AI ideas without genuinely processing them. This requires maturity and discipline.
- Summarizing long texts. Helpful for very long background reading, harmful if it replaces reading the actual assigned text.
❌ Inappropriate AI Use (Set Clear Limits)
- Generating first drafts of essays or written assignments. Even with revisions, the most cognitively valuable part — the initial thinking and organizing — was outsourced.
- Solving problems before attempting them. Getting the answer before trying is like Googling a word before trying to spell it. It bypasses the productive struggle.
- Passing off AI output as personal work when the teacher has asked for the student's own voice and reasoning.
The Developmental Lens: It Depends on Age
A one-size-fits-all policy ignores a crucial variable: your child's age and developmental stage.
Elementary school (ages 6-11): This is the critical period for building foundational skills — reading fluency, number sense, writing mechanics, logical reasoning. These skills cannot be borrowed. Any AI use during this period that replaces the practice of these fundamentals is genuinely harmful. Keep AI out of homework at this stage, with very limited exceptions.
Middle school (ages 11-14): The most vulnerable zone. Students are old enough to use AI effectively but not yet developmentally ready for the metacognitive discipline required to use it wisely. AI policies should be conservative, with heavy emphasis on "show your thinking" requirements.
High school (ages 14-18): This is where nuanced AI use can be taught explicitly. High schoolers can begin learning to use AI as a thought partner — but only if they have solid reasoning foundations from the earlier years. If those foundations weren't built, unsupervised AI use will erode whatever is there.
A Family Agreement That Actually Works
Rather than a blanket rule, consider creating a Family AI Agreement — a simple set of principles your household follows. Here's a starting template:
- Try first. Before using any AI tool, you must have genuinely attempted the problem yourself.
- Cite it. If AI was used at any point, note it — just like citing any other source. This builds honesty habits.
- Understand it. You must be able to explain anything in your submitted work without the AI present.
- Follow your teacher's rules. School policies take precedence. If the teacher says no AI, that means no AI.
- Ask a person if you're stuck first. The first step when stuck is to ask a parent, sibling, or classmate — not a chatbot.
This agreement isn't about surveillance. It's about building the habits that serve your child for life.
The Bigger Picture: Raising a Thinker
ChatGPT is not going away. Neither are its successors, which will be more capable, more integrated, and more present in your child's life. Banning AI entirely is neither realistic nor particularly wise preparation for the world your child will enter.
The goal is to raise a child who uses AI as a powerful tool — while retaining their own capacity for independent reasoning, deep reading, creative thinking, and intellectual courage. Those capacities are built through years of practice. They cannot be outsourced without being lost.
The framework above is not about AI. It's about learning. And learning has always required the same thing: genuine engagement with hard problems, over time, by the person who needs to grow.
